Crash Update 18 Days Later
It has been 18 days since my T-bone crash with the teenage girl at Atascocita High School. Since then most of my efforts concentrated on getting over the injuries. I started physical therapy this week on my right shoulder. Next week the therapy will focus on the area just above my buttocks where I landed. The following week will be on my left leg from the knee to my foot. This is what my hematoma looks like today:
The most painful area has been my buttocks. The bruise made sitting on anything hard almost impossible. The bruise is starting to go away and the pain from sitting gets less each day. The leg looks bad and can be painful if I don’t walk so I have been going for walks each day. The hematoma decreased in size but is still hard to the touch. The front of my shin is touchy and I seem to run into something about every day to remind me. The road rash scabs have fallen off so all that is left is the pink skin under them. My left elbow was the first spot to get better.
Since the crash the driver and mother filed an incident report with the Humble ISD Police department that agreed with mine. Not knowing this I drove the Atascocita HS parking lot the Monday after the crash looking for the car. I found it with a large dent in the driver’s side rear quarter panel. I sent a picture to the Humble ISD police officer and that is when I learned about the girl’s incident report. It took several days attempting to get information about the driver so that I could discuss the damages. I spoke with the father this past Tuesday. I voiced my thoughts about taking so long to get in touch with me and he said I should not have been riding on the street. The conversation did not last too long with him directing me to his insurance company to file my claim. I did that on Wednesday and according to the claim handler they sent a check to pay for the damaged parts I replaced on my bike. The medical portion will be settled later, I guess.
The bike repairs took place last week when I received the last parts. The pictures show the damage. My helmet has a split up the back plus the outside cover buckled. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of wearing a helmet. The helmet split, NOT MY HEAD. The left shift lever was scratched from hitting the pavement and sliding. The handle bar broke from hitting the car. The Garmin Edge 500 suffered a cracked screen and multiple scratches probably from hitting the pavement and some cars driving over it. I never did find the mount.
My Motobecane Le Champion CF sits in the garage waiting for me to ride again. If the physical therapy permits I hope to ride again next week. The Motobcane after the repairs.
