If you go
What: Texas State Road Championship — Fort Hood Challenge
Where: Elijah and Old Georgetown Road, Copperas Cove
When: Sept. 28-29
“It is a big deal. It is the state championship,†said Andy Hollinger, the race’s promoter. “It is the last road event for the 2013 season sanctioned by the official bike racing association of Texas.â€
Fort Hood closes range roads to allow the cyclists to ride the loop and not compete with motor vehicle traffic. The professional-level racers will manage the loop three times for a nearly 100-mile competition.
“The road runs right by the range, so a lot of the racers are in for a treat,†said Betty Price, Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau’s president. “(Riders) actually enjoy seeing the…
Why we chose our cyclocross bikes
by Adam & Lauren, PFB Crew West         www.peopleforbikes.org
Adam and I have been on the road since April and have experienced rides that we only dreamed about. When we first left Texas, we stood in tour bike room (yes, we have a bike room, but no kids yet so it works for now) and asked what bike should we take? This is also a question that we are often asked by fellow bike enthusiasts who stop by our tent. After much research and miles ridden, we decided on cyclocross (CX) bikes would be our steeds of choice. Only this was a sad day for me because I did not have one. So, of course, I had to get one!
If you’re not familiar with CX bikes, they look like road bikes but have knobby tires for mud, snow, sand, or whatever the course conditions might be. These bikes are perfect for…

Work to start soon on new 14-mile bike trail
By Craig Hlavaty      www.chron.com
Mayor Annise Parker and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials on Friday detailed their plans to build 14 miles of new hike-and-bike trails along Sims Bayou.
Work on the trails, stretching from Interstate 45 to Croquett Street, should begin in November and be completed by fall 2015. The construction will cost about $7 million and be done in five phases.
The bikeway is to connect seven city parks – Reveille Park, Stuart Park, Law Park, Sims Bayou Park, the County’s Hill at Sims Park, Scottcrest Park, and Townwood Park – according to a city news release.
Parker said her goal is that one day, cyclists will be able to ride from one side of the city to the other. This project will help fill in…
UPDATE: San Antonio’s Loop 1604
www.BikeTexas.org
On August 21, 2013, in what was the culmination of a months-long process of advocating for bicycle accommodation on Loop 1604 access roads, the Alamo RMA Board unanimously approved the construction bid for re-striping the road to accommodate a wide outside lane and include signage to alert motorists to the presence of bicyclists.
Prior to construction of the interchange at Loop 1604 and US 281, the access road had an 8′ wide shoulder used by many people riding bikes for transportation and recreation. During construction, TxDOT’s requirement of three travel lanes instead of two was accommodated by removing…
