University police conduct annual bicycle round up

The University Police Department conducted its annual Bicycle Round Up in May, collecting a number of abandoned bicycles that were strewn about campus.
This year’s round up yielded about 75 unregistered bicycles and parts, including salvageable accessories and locks, said UPD officer Otto Glenewinkel. The police department impounds unregistered bikes that are still operable for about 120 days to allow owners to claim them.

James Shepherd recovering from serious injuries

BMX legend and early influential street rider James Shepherd was released from the hospital Wednesday after suffering serious injuries while riding his bike July 4 in Austin, Texas.
Shepherd, 42, was traveling via BMX bike on South Lamar Boulevard in Austin when a car veered too close to him, according to Tom Williams, a longtime friend of Shepherd’s and the owner of Empire BMX, a shop in Austin. As a result, Shepherd swerved into a utility pole and was thrown from his bicycle.
Shepherd suffered serious injuries that include a fractured skull, a broken jaw, a broken neck, a broken clavicle and a torn ACL in his knee, according to medical staff at Austin’s University Medical Center Brackenridge, where Shepherd was…

Come join us for the 3nd Annual CPR Ride and Summer Picnic, aka the Third Annual Memorial Ride and Picnic for the Formerly Late Stanton Truxillo. This ride and picnic, with a free, hands only CPR class at noon, was inspired by the life and brain saving CPR administered by a good Samaritan when ACA member Stanton Truxillo suffered a massive heart attack on an ACA ride on August 4, 2010.

An Austin Firefighter Struck by a Drowsy Driver While Cycling is in a Coma

Austin firefighter Colin Camp was riding in a 14-foot-wide bicycle lane on Tuesday, June 18, when a man driving a pickup struck him from behind and then tried to flee the scene. Camp is at University Medical Center Brackenridge; he is in a coma. The 60-year-old pickup truck driver was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and failure to stop and render aid.
