Nepal to Texas – June 25th Bike Ride
Another route that I do not ride regularly today. I added a leg to the Huffman route going east on FM1960 to the Liberty County line. The reason I turned there is the road surface in Liberty County is the rough chip n seal. Once upon a time FM1960 was smooth all the way to Dayton but TxDot fixed that several years ago. When I stopped at my favorite Huffman Chevron I just refilled my water bottle for the ride east to the county line. There are no stores until I get back on FM1960. Biking on Smith Road from FM2100 I bypassed the Huffman Chevron so I stopped at the Exxon on FM1960 and East Lake Houston Parkway. I had not stopped at this station since they tore down the original building and built a new one behind it. Not sure why I avoided it but maybe because it was closer to home when I go this route.
While I was at the Exxon station I talked with one of the clerks who was taking his break outside. He was Nepal and we talked about my bike and where he lived before coming to Texas. He said while he lived in Colorado he did not have a car so he rode a bike to get around. After there he moved to Minnesota. Minnesota was too cold for him so he moved to Texas. Surprisingly he said the Houston winter was not too different from where he lived in Nepal. We had a nice conversation.
The weather this week is supposed to be hot. I left home at 10:37 and it was already 89 degrees and I finished at 1:34 with 93.6 degrees. The humidity went from 58% to 44% which I welcomed. For some reason I wore wrist bands today and they soaked up a lot of perspiration. A short sleeve jersey, shorts and sunscreen completed my wardrobe. When I stopped at the Exxon station sitting in the shade felt good as the 10 mph SW breeze moved across my clothes. After I got home I watched the temperature go up to 97 degrees.
Today’s route was 37.23 miles. I averaged 15.6 mph. So far I biked 730.59 miles in June on 22 riding days. 800 miles for the month looks possible. 3170 miles for the year over 101 riding days. Already this week totals 72.17 miles. Tomorrow’s weather should be a repeat of today.
