DIY – Wash Your Bike
by djcurtin         Bicycle Sport Shop’s Offical Cycling Blog
Whether you’ve been purposefully riding in the recent rains, or just got caught out in it, your bike is likely pretty filthy. Spray off passing vehicles and other riders, road grime, lube coming off your chain, and the rain itself, not to mention dirt and mud from areas like the hike and bike trial, can all lend to a pretty dirty bike. Add to that just normal wear, and maybe the fact that your bike…
MapMyRide Gran Fondo at The Driveway on Saturday March 9.
http://www.hollandracing.net
The MapMyRide Gran Fondo is a non-competitive bicycle ride with a twist. Instead of riding a set distance, you ride laps at the beatiful Driveway Austin Motorsports race track for a set duration. Choose from a 5, 3 or 1 hour challenge and then go out and see how far and fast you can ride. A neutral aid station (aka pit stop) will be set up. Feel free to pull in and fill up on drinks and snacks as often as you want. …

By Whitney Radley         houston.culturemap.com

Proposed parking rules need another look
Houston Chronicle
When folks say that Houston is a business-friendly city, they often speak in the language of national politics: low taxes and lax regulations. And there’s our oft-mentioned lack of zoning. But for many businesses, that language simply doesn’t translate. Their concerns aren’t shouted by partisan heads on cable news, but argued before Houston City Council by local citizens. And the current pressing issue is parking regulations.
Houston is undeniably a driving city, and our current parking regulations reflect that. As our city changes, the parking rules should change too. But this means allowing for greater density and flexibility, not regulations that parking rules need another look

UT Race Weekend
www.mwsu.info
Women’s A rider Jessica Prinner wrote up this fantastic race report of the UT Race Weekend, enjoy.
Don’t worry Jessi, no ones back there.
“Going into my second collegiate road season, I was mentally prepared for this past weekend. Half of collegiate racing isn’t even about the racing; it’s about compromising among 15 people, 2 vans, lots of luggage, 4 people to a room, and figuring out where or what to eat. You can’t deny this is a big stress put on the body and mind, and it’s important to be prepared for anything. Amber Neben once told me a great saying she lives by in the…

KidsKup 2013 Off to an Exciting Start
by Susan Wilcox         BikeTexas.org
The exciting final sprint of the Rocky Hill race.Saturday, February 9, dawned grey and dreary, with some drizzle and light rain. BikeTexas staff headed out to Smithville to kick off the 2013 KidsKup series with the Rocky Hill Roundup. Before long, we had over 30 children registered and the course was laid out, so the course opened for pre-riding.
The first rider on the course was a two-year-old on his strider bike. He rode all over until his dad convinced him to ride within the blue lines, but the young man took Dad at his word and rode directly on the blue line! The other children and their parents enjoyed watching him make the first lap, and…
Cyclist Accommodation on Loop 1604
by Susan Wilcox         BikeTexas.org
Loop 1604 and westbound access road just west of US 281.Loop 1604 is a major corridor for many San Antonio cyclists, who rely on the eight-foot shoulders on the road to stay out of harm’s way. In recent months, during a interchange construction project (at US 281), those shoulders were removed from the road in favor of wider car lanes.
San Antonio cyclists, alarmed and angered by this change, contacted TxDOT, the Bexar County MPO, and BikeTexas to protest the loss of the shoulders. On Wednesday, February 13, BikeTexas found out that the Alamo RMA had the authority to change the…

UT / Texas State Race Report
UT Race
Jahshan Bhatti
On Saturday, the University of Texas at Austin hosted a road race and team time trial at Pace Bend park. The location was perfect–seeing the stars out so bright before sunrise and the park’s beauty (so many bluebonnets!) in daylight. For the first wave of the road race, I was corner marshalling and got excellent glimpses of the upper category fields as they passed (and mixed–the Garmin Dev. Team is fast!). Given that this weekend was my second cycling competition ever (and I’m not very fast), I was just hoping to keep…
Texas A&M Race Report
Last weekend was Tunis-Roubaix put on by Texas A&M, and it was also the first SCCCCCCCCC collegiate cycling conference competition compendium of the year! It also happened to be my first collegiate race weekend. Aside from one little problem and one other not so little problem, it was fantastic!! Collegiate race weekends, for the uninitiated, include 3 races: a road race, a time trial (or team time trial), and a…
