Bike commuting continues to rise in the U.S.
People for Bikes Blog
Every year, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates the share of Americans who bike to work. Although the survey only counts people as bike commuters if they ride to work the majority of days (among other restrictions), it’s the best way to track the growth of bicycling to work. The League of American Bicyclists crunched the latest survey data and found that bike commuting rose slightly (though not significantly), from 0.53% in 2010 to 0.56% in 2011.
Since 2000, bike commuting grew 47% on average in the U.S. It fared even better in large cities, where it increased 73% on average. If you live in a metropolitan area, you can see how your city stacked up in the chart…

A Morning With Dex Tooke
by Darryl         lovingthebike.com
One of the greatest things about being involved in the cycling industry is getting to know incredible people from all over the world. Through one of my other cycling inspirations (Ryan van Duzer), I connected with Dex Tooke who is one incredible endurance cyclist. Today I got to finally meet up with him and spend some time together.
Dex has completed the Race Across America (RAAM) twice and in doing so is one of only 6 people over 60 to ever complete this ultra-challenge. On top of this he’s competed in countless ultra-endurance cycling races and just recently came in third at the Texas Time Trial 24 Hour Ironbutt….completing 344.5 miles in 23:43. Insane. …

Cycling Around The Globe: Sherrif Buford Pusser
by Rudy Pospisi         blogs.theprovince.com
I will tell you about Houston Texas in a minute but a strange incident happened on the Texas Louisiana State line.
I had stopped and taken this picture of China Texas. I need to document for The Guinness people my progress to prove where I have been for a global circumnavigation certification. I knew I was getting in to some real deep south territory when I rode by a house and some good old boys were skinning raccoons in the front yard. I was told to look out for Cajuns Ill have to look up what a Cajun is. Maybe some French Quebec type separatists that have moved to the south and are…

NICA Makes Mountain Biking the Newest High School Sport
By Raising Rippers         www.outsideonline.com
Last week the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) brought its biannual World Summit to Santa Fe. In addition to test-riding some sweet 29er bikes from Specialized, Yeti, and Santa Cruz, I got to sit in on a bunch of brainstorming sessions with fat-tire advocates from around the country about how to grow the sport, expand trail networks, and get more people on bikes, period.
…NICA bills itself as a youth development program whose mission is to strengthen mind, body, and character using bikes as the medium. Founded in 2009, it grew out of the successful NorCal High School Cycling League, the first scholastic mountain-bike racing program in the country. Now there are more than a thousand high school students racing in NICA leagues in seven states: California, Colorado, Utah, Minnesota, Washington, Texas, and Utah, where the debut race, in…
Offseason Yard Work
by Ken         Texas Racing Life
I am in the middle of the “offseason,†which really means I’m not racing. It doesn’t mean I stop riding my bike. I also have a bunch of projects I’ve put off because of racing and the scorching summer heat. In July, Ally and I bought our first house in the The Heights of Houston. I have really enjoyed having the house, and I’m so glad we made the move back inside the loop of Houston. The neighborhood is fun and diverse, and I’m glad to know my neighbors by name.
One problem that most of Houston has is drainage. My backyard was no exception, and when really hard rains came, it would puddle up a couple of inches of water, which would not drain off quickly. Being the engineer, this REALLY bothered me, and I have been obsessing over ways to optimize the drainage of the backyard. I hired a “drainage expert†to install a sump pump for a pretty penny, which really didn’t do anything except increase my…
