Chip’n Seal Goes Away – June 9th Bike Ride
The last time I rode this route on 5/18/2012 a section of FM1485 west of US59 sported the dreaded chip’n seal road surface. At the time I feared this might be permanent but today I thought enough time passed so I went that way again. Thankfully the chip’n seal surface got replaced with some nice and smooth asphalt. There is a short section in the left turn lane at Gene Campbell Road still waiting resurfacing but it will probably disappear soon.
My start time got delayed some to 10:45 because of a meeting at my church. We want to start a men’s group and needed a planning session today. With the later start I thought the heat would be higher but thanks to the rain during the night the temperature was not bad with a 81 – 89 range but the humidity at the start was a moist 76%. By the time I finished it dropped to 58%. While I stopped at the Star Express Exxon in Porter a man filling his car talked with about how he had just moved back to Houston from West Texas after a year there and how much higher the humidity was here. He said he lived here before he moved but got used to the dryness quickly and missed it. A few minutes later a woman gassing up asked about my route. She said a co-worker biked over by I-45 and rode to US59, the opposite of what I do. Partly cloudy skies and a very light 4 mph east breeze made for a nice ride.
When I got to the 30 mile point I checked my Garmin Edge 500 for my average speed and surprising it showed 16.5 mph. I did not realize the pace I rode. The full route ended up at 35.19 miles and the final average speed was 16.3 mph according Garmin Connect. For some reason SportTracks dropped it to 15.9 mph. Riding time totaled 2:12:57 with 27:53 stopped. My max speed was 22.7 mph on Garmin Connect with an average cadence of 83 RPM. Tomorrow I have a church meeting in the afternoon so I will probably not ride. So as the week ends my mileage standings: 191.79 miles this week, 265.89 miles in June, 3,056.27 miles YTD.
