A Touch of Celebrity – May 4th Bicycle Ride
I wanted to get started early today but I did not get out of the driveway until 10:14. The timing turned out to be good. Later on as I biked north on the US59 service road and stopped at the North Park Drive traffic light I experienced a touch of celebrity. As I stood waiting for the light to change a car pulled up on my right preparing to turn right onto North Park. The driver put his window down and asked how far I planned on riding today. I said that I expected to bike 30 to 32 miles. He then looked at me and asked if I was Texbiker. This took me by surprise as I think I live out of any spotlight. When the light changed he drove off. Sometimes I wear my Texbiker.net jersey but not today so this man must know of me by either visiting the website or maybe seeing me biking with my jersey on. I am not sure how he knew but wearing sunglasses today did not maintain my cover.
Otherwise the ride went as planned. The weather accommodated my biking with scattered clouds, a light breeze from the north, 82 to 87 degree temperature and 57% humidity. The humidity probably causes the most problems because when I stop the perspiration pours off my arms and head. Sometimes while biking I will dip my chin down on my right side and I see many drops fall to the ground. When I stopped at the Chevron station in New Caney to refill my waterbottle I used several paper towels to soak up the sweat and the blow dryer in the restroom provided a short relief but not for long once I headed north on FM1485 the sweat came back. Later on I stopped at the Valero station on FM1314 to repeat the process except their restroom does not have a blow dryer. It did have industrial wiping towels because the towel dispenser was empty. The little rubber-like pieces in the paper made wiping the sweat more difficult.
So far May riding is going well riding each of the 4 days. Today I rode 35.2 miles in 2:17:02. Top speed hit 20.2 mph which does not seem to support my 15.4 mph average speed. Average cadence dropped from yesterday to 80.2 RPM. May miles stand at 128.91. Miles this week includes one day from April and total 159.09. Year to date I biked 2064.58 miles. I thought my average speed would be higher since I rode at 17.2 mph for 25.47 miles. The table below shows the breakdown speeds and the distance.
