Legs Could Not Overcome the Wind – April 26th Bicycle Ride
My legs could were no match for the wind today. I started out on my northerly route hoping the tailwind from the south would help my legs get loose and ready for the return into the wind. With the wind from the south at 18.6 mph and 26.5 mph gusts going back home went slow. I geared down one rear cog which helped some but not enough so that I could do a mile in less than 4 minutes, the pace to get to 15.0 mph average speed. The wind was especially strong on the US59 service road where the there are no trees to protect me. Going north this is a good thing because I rode at 20+ mph for about 8 miles until I got to FM1485 in New Caney.
This was not unexpected with the mileage and number of rides since April 18th. Today is the ninth day in a row biking and the muscles can only do so much without rest. I did work in the yard before biking clipping some dead branches from our waxleaf ligustrums and trimming red tip photenias. The trash men will love me tomorrow. I will take Saturday and Sunday off due to a meeting and Special Olympics cycle practice with my niece. The rest will be appreciated. I should be able to ride tomorrow.
The weather heated up some today with the temperature range of 88-90 degrees with 40% humidity. The south wind moved in some high level clouds but it was warm.
I wanted to get at least 30 miles in and ended up at 30.16 miles. My average speed fell to 14.5 mph and my max speed was 20.9 mph. Average cadence was 77.5 RPM. Other ride numbers:
- 2:04:37 riding time
- 9:17 stopped time (no food stops today)
- 8:42:27 riding time this week
- 15.0 mph average speed this week (15.4 mph last week)
- 130.71 miles this week
- 624.03 miles in April
- 1843.38 miles YTD
