Another Day My Average Speed is Above 15 MPH – August 23rd Bike Ride — 4 Comments

  1. Good job. My ride this morning also had an increased average mph on the 25 mile route at 14.7. Still trying to find the ideal saddle height/angle.

  2. The saddle is an important component. I have searched for the best saddle for years and once you have a comfortable one getting it set correct is the next most important thing. Hope you get it right soon.

  3. I was being damaged (literally and intimately) by the WTB saddle that came stock on the Surly LHT. I had long read of the preference among the Clydes who mount LHTs for Brooks and I purchased one before I had reached 200 miles. The Brooks B-17 Imperial Narrow has been a good choice.

The big problem I faced in this part of my riding was realizing that there is a major difference between a bicycle seat and a bicycle saddle. The foamy, squishy seat on my hybrid was fine, for someone sitting. I knew about positioning onto my sit bones but it really hadn’t become part of my riding position because of the upright posture native to riding a hybrid.

If you try to ride in road bike posture by sitting on a saddle you are going to get hurt. Seriously. Getting your weight onto your legs first, sit bones and hands next is going to give your cycling more power than you’ll ever experience riding a comfort bike with an upright posture.

You can sit up, even take your hands off the handlebars of a road bike and still roll forward in a straight line, weight on your legs with your sit bones resting against the saddle. But you are still not seated. You are mounted.

  4. I have tried a multitude of saddles including a Brooks. I gave up on the Brooks because it would conform to my butt even though it was supposed to be “pre-softened”. Searching for THE saddle is like searching for the Holy Grail. I cannot count the number of saddles I have purchased; I have returned some and sold some on Ebay.

I like your points about how you mount a saddle on a road bike. My current favorite is a Koobi PRS Century. My hands and feet are now connected properly.
