King of the Causeway – South Padre Island, TX
King of the Causeway
2-Stage Saturday Road Race – The final road race of the year in Texas. The South Texas weather makes this an ideal location for this road race. SPI BikeFest, the City of South Padre Island, and the surrounding communities pull out all the stops to make this road race challenging, exciting and safe for all participating cyclists. The day starts with a 52-mile road race through the southern-most tip of Texas and includes sprinting and climbing primes, full police & motorcycle escort, as well as race officials monitoring the course. Night time brings the annual Iron Horse Sunset Memorial Motorcycle Parade for which thousands of spectators line the street. For the past four years, the King of the Causeway night race has led the parade through the main boulevard on the Island. This year, we have increased the race to 15 miles starting at Morningside and Padre Boulevard. Cyclists start on the Island, cross the causeway twice (2.2 miles each way with a steep climb of 73 feet at its peak), and cross the finish line again at Morningside and Padre Boulevard. Classifications: Men’s & Women’s Open, Intermediate.
Sunday Bicycle Tour and Poker Run* – Cyclists set out from Schlitterbahn Waterpark on the Island, across the Causeway to the mainland for a 10, 25 or 50 mile ride and poker run through deep South Texas. The route for the tour and the South Texas winds offer great challenges to the cyclist. As in years past, participants will be offered the chance to earn a second poker hand by accepting the Tour challenge* and returning with the item of proof for the drawing. The ride is capped off with the popular poker run back at the Convention Center with lots of great prizes and where food and beverages will be available to the participants.
