Jalapeno 100 Ride/Walk – Harlingen, TX — 2 Comments

  1. Harlingen, TX February 2010

We could not have asked for a better day to pin on our numbers and ride the Jalapeno 100 sponsored by the city of Harlingen. We chose to pedal the twenty-five mile course instead of the 50 or 100-mile course. As it turned out, most of the riders chose the same course as us.
When the sun finally rose above the horizon, the starter’s pistol let out a bang and we were off (all 575 of us crazies)! Although the temperature was 47° at the 7:45 AM start, the cool weather actually helped Bob, who had left his full-fingered gloves back in the RV (and won’t make that mistake again anytime soon). The crisp air helped freeze his fingers to the handlebars which of course improved his grip immensely. You bet!
After an hour or so of riding, the temperature rose to the low seventies and we commenced to have some serious FUN, particularly when we passed younger riders looking exhausted and taking rest breaks on the side of the road. Yahoo! As we passed them, Sandra would smile and ask, “Are you OK” (a.k.a. rub it in). What a gal! Good grief … the course was so flat you could see all the way to Mexico. When we arrived at the finish line, we were greeted with cheers (from three little kids sitting on the curb), commemorative t-shirts, hamburgers (with Jalapenos of course), chips, Budweiser and Coke. Ye haw! We should have chosen the fifty-mile course option; at two-hours and forty-five minutes, the twenty-five-mile course seemed way too short. It took a couple of hours dancing later that evening to work off the buzz!

  2. I remember the cold front that went through Texas just before that weekend. I wanted to go to the Jalapeno but my wife was not in favor so we stayed home. Sounds like the chilly weather only lasted a short time. Glad to hear of your great ride.
