Oklahoma resident Don Jonason finished the 2009 Hotter’N Hell Hundred in less than five hours in these dress shoes after he accidentally left his cycling shoes at home. Next to the shoes is his Shimano SPD SL pedal, which would have attached to his cycling shoes.

LAKE HALLIE — Just 10 months ago, Juan Carlos Hernandez was laying in surgery having his right leg amputated. Tuesday, he biked70 miles and was so energized, he turned back and traveled several more.

The Chisum truck stop is an unlikely hangout for travelers who don’t need gas and aren’t ordering fast food.
