I was tired of being on a road bike, so yesterday I decided it was time to go for a mountain bike ride. One of my favorite trails in this area is Flat Rock Ranch in Comfort Texas. Just north of San Antonio, Comfort is right in the middle of the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Flat Rock Ranch is a gem with over 25 miles of single track on 1100 acres of land. Temperature: 80 at the start, 97 at the end, heat index around 102.
Wind: 5-10 mph from the south, made no difference.
Rest Stops: Very good, stopped at a couple, the rest were a blur.
Road Surface: Good, some minor chipseal in a few spots.
Hills: Mostly small rollers with 2 very steep ones at the 45 and 55 mile mark, one called the “Goatneck” hence the ride’s name (why they called it that I have no idea). …

Today was my father’s 76th Birthday. For the fourth year in a row, we rode a mile for each year. This year our ride covered 76 miles. My Dad decided to do this ride annually since he was diagnosed with cancer in 2006. Since then, he has riden his age in miles each year. The first year, we rode in my hometown of The Woodlands, TX. The next two years, the ride was in his hometown of Venice, FL. And this year, the ride was back in The Woodlands, Tx.
My Dad and I left my house at 6:30am and headed towards Montgomery, TX (about 25 miles northwest). Kashay joined us in Montgomery (she drove to Montgomery from our house)and rode with us for about 20 miles in Sam Houston forest. My Dad and I then rode back to The Woodlands covering an additional 31 miles. …
