Plum Grove on a Saturday Morning – July 17th Bike Ride — 2 Comments

  1. My parents still live in Plum Grove, about 2 miles from Sallas Grocery. My brothers and I would ride our “BMX” bikes there in the summertime, get a Coke and a snack, then ride home. As far as the workforce goes, I think most folks commute long distances to work: my Dad is retired HPD, and we knew other Houston police and firemen that commuted 80 miles round trip daily. It’s too bad that Sallas Grocery is closed — the hardwood floors in that place were burnished and filled with character.

  2. I had never been inside Sallas Grocery although I have rode by there numerous times. It kinda reminds me of the small store my Grandfather went to in Gratiot Ohio to meet with the other men in town. In the winter everyone gathered around the pot belly stove.
There must be a number of people who commute from places like Plum Grove into Houston. I know people who drive from Livingston which is much further.
Back in the day I rode my bike to a small store not too far away. Are things different today for the kids?
