Memorial Day, A Time To Remember – May 31st Bike Ride
Today is a day set aside to remember those people who have served in the Armed Forces throughout our country’s existence to preserve the freedom we have. When I was growing up there were parades where the veterans and those serving would march down Main Street in Zanesville and Gratiot Ohio. People along the street would cheer and wave small flags. Bands would play patriotic songs (mostly likely Sousa ones) and then after the parade my parents would take us to the Poplar Fork Cemetery to walk around and visit relatives and friend who had died. Some served in the military, some did not. Those who served would have small US flags by their tombstones. My grandparents lived in Gratiot and knew everyone in town. My grandfather Ankrum served in World War I, my father served in World War II and an uncle was killed in Africa during World War II; his body was never recovered. To these and all the others we own a debt of gratitude. We fly the US flag in front our home in memory and to honor those who serve.
While I was out riding today I saw numerous US flags in front of homes and businesses.
I got an early start this morning. Last evening’s rain storm was welcomed and the roads had dried off. The temperature was about 75 degrees, skies clear and the breeze was light (7 mph from the WSW). I did not see any other riders along my route but I did notice a number of people who were doing normal workday stuff. A beer truck was making deliveries, yard people mowing yards, and trucks driving on US59. It was quiet in my neighborhood when I headed out. The school zone lights were flashing but no kids were in school. The humidity was high so when I stopped for a cold drink the sweat poured off of me while I rested. Just about time to start riding again the sweat was slowing down. When I got home my bike shorts felt like I had just got out of the pool. This was the last ride of May.
