A Tale of 2 Bike Commuters in Temple

Forget the spandex shorts, yellow jersey and colorful helmet. This blue-collar biker on his daily commute does just fine wearing cotton and a cap. Dodging dogs, broken glass and sometimes road kill, he travels 26 miles, four days a week, riding a plain, black mountain bike.

Sometime last spring, Thomas Hill pledged to his co-workers he would buy a bicycle and ride it to work when gas hit $3.50 per gallon. That day soon came, and he shunned his Ford Ranger pickup for a two-wheeler.

  1. For years some bicyclists have searched for the magic to convert drivers to riders. For these two the price of gasoline was the trigger.

    I kept waiting to read something in the story how Thomas had lost weight as he got further into commuting but I did not see this point made.

    With the price of gasoline retreating somewhat will these two return to their cars?
