Today was my first ride on the Trek Marlin 8 MTB I bough last month. I haven’t had an opportunity to ride it until today. I can’ remember the last time I rode a MTB and this was a get to know me ride. Checking SportTracks I saw the last MTB I owned was a Motobecane – 2010 700HT last rode 6 years 2 months ago. The Trek rides on 29″ tires and is a size M/L which took some time to learn how to get on and off. Figuring out how to change the rear gears took a few minutes too. One lever was behind the brake lever on the right side. Compared to the 28mm tires on my road bikes the 29×2.35 tire looked huge but they absorbed bumps my road bikes would’ve bounced over. The weather was great for a MTB ride on Kingwood’s greenbelt trails. Weather: Start 82 degrees, humidity 62%, dew point 67.5, partly cloudy, wind S 12 mph gusts 20 mph; Finish 81 degrees, humidity 61%, dew point 66.7, partly cloudy, wind SE 14 mph. An extra reward from Strava Local Legend on Kings Crossing North (2:31).
I made it to Wednesday, April 3rd. Today was going to be a climbing day. The downhill road from Panther Junction to Rio Grand Village now was uphill for 20 miles back to Panther Junction. I slept a little better on the hard ground without rocks. It was a short reprieve until tonight. Riding away from the group campground back to the intersection by the store the right turn waited. The chip’n seal road wound to the tunnel and beyond. I made several stops on the road to Panther Junction. Another cyclist just passed me coasting to Rio Grand Village. A Border Patrol officer stopped and asked if I was okay. I asked if he gave a tow and he said yes but was going the opposite direction.
The 20 miles took awhile and when I reached Panther Junction I stayed there about an hour before heading out. Partially this was to recover and more because of the huge climb waiting up the road when I turned left to Chisos Basin. I ate my lunch while waiting hoping the energy would propel me up the climb. Back on my Canyon Endurace I rode through the parking lot to the road. About 2.3 miles later I turned left. The summit loomed large ahead. I pedaled hard to 25.3 miles got off the bike and walked to 25.7 miles to a pull off with a bear and mountain lion sign. I waited for the van and a ride to the summit. My legs wouldn’t pedal anymore. Evan pulled up in the van, loaded my bike and drove slowly to the summit. There was a parking lot to the left with enough space for the van to park and get my bike out. Before descending I talked to a man from New Jersey who was waiting for a parking spot. The descend down to Chisos Basin was tricky with a couple of switchbacks and steep hills. I found the group campground and rode to the van. The campsite consisted of rocks, just what I wanted! When it came time to setup the tent the stakes wouldn’t go in the ground and Chris put large rocks on the stakes to hold my tent in place. Dinner was cooked by another team and we headed to our tents as the sun set. My ground pad and air mattress softened the rocks some. The restroom was insight but the way to get there wasn’t short. I think I made 2 trips in the dark with my flashlight. Wind was a problem during the night buffeting my large tent frequently.
Before dinner Evan drove everyone in the van to Study Butte to a motel for showers. For $2 we each got 6 minutes to shower. while we showered Evan took Jim’s Cervelo bike to Desert Sports to fix the rear tubeless tire. He would pick it up the next day, Thursday.
Thursday was a rest day with no riding. I stayed at the campsite while other went hiking to the basin wedge. Two days sleeping on the rocks was hard. So far Jim and I had not cooked dinner. Our day was coming.
Why pack up bikes, gear & friends & go race bikes? To get out of your comfort zone, break up the routine, be part of the community & be reminded how lucky we are to get to do this. Thank you Debbie, Mike & everyone at Castell Grind for 10 years of fun in the sand.#rideyourbikepic.twitter.com/Ik7YTs1CJv

As I ate breakfast and waited for the temperature to go more I watched the Tour du Jura from France on Max B/R Sports. The riders were in sun as I would be when I started riding. I rode away at 10:19 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia, the rear tire still nice and firm from the tube replacement yesterday. I hoped to see other cyclists so I chose my Reverse Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route which gets me to FM1960 and Atascocita Shores Drive quicker than the not reversed version. I rode this last on September 7th, 2023. I did see other cyclists on Atascocita Shores Drive and Old Atascocita Road. On the way back I stopped at Donald’s Donuts for a glazed donut to fuel me back to Kingwood. I haven’t stopped there this year. It tasted good and I’ll stop there more often. The wind was light and my legs felt good powering me along nicely.
Weather: Start 74 degrees, humidity 66%, dew point 62.0, mostly cloudy, wind calm: Finish 79 degrees, humidity 46%, dew point 56.9, partly cloudy, wind SE 9 mph.
