Freight Train Tango: When Cyclists and Rails Collide
I planned on riding my usual Saturday route, Atascocita – Huffman – Walden, and I was well on my way until the railroad crossing on Old Atascocita road. A long slow moving freight train came to a stop blocking the crossing. Another cyclist rode up and we waited, and waited. I was standing in the sun so I walked back to the shade where the other cyclist was. At 10 AM I decided the train was going to there awhile. I turned the Cervelo Caledonia around and rode back to FM1960. From there I biked east to FM2100 to get around the stopped train. On FM1960 3 cyclists pedaled to the west probably to get around the train because I usually see them on Old Atascocita Road. Making the right turn onto FM2100 it wasn’t too long before I saw a large group of cyclist riding north probably to get around the train. I usually see them on Old Atascocita Road too. At Old Atascocita Road I looked to the west to check on the train and the red crossing lights flashed the answer, still blocked. I did not see the cyclist that pulled up when I was stopped. He said he parked his car at Lake Houston Brewery and wanted to ride 30 miles because he rode yesterday too.
Starting at 8:25 AM was the earliest this week and I wanted to see other cyclists which I managed to do with the route change. The new route was on familiar streets but I don’t think ever in this configuration. I needed a new route name and decided on Atascocita – Huffman Double Back because I doubled back at the railroad crossing and again on FM2100 at Old Atascocita Road. I’ll try to remember the name if this happens again.
I claimed the Strava Local Legend on Bridge of death (5:14) riding west over Lake Houston. This is kind of surprising because many other cyclists travel there. According to the email notice my 31 times in the last 90 days was enough.
The temperature was cool but the humidity was very high. Every time I stopped sweat ran down my body. Rain was in the afternoon forecast so finishing at 11:24 AM was good. Weather: Start 76 degrees, humidity 93%, dew point 72.4, mostly cloudy, wind calm: Finish 87 degrees, humidity 70%, dew point 76.4, partly cloudy, wind SE 9 mph.
