Wind and Wheels: Outsmarting School Traffic and Claiming a Local Legend
Last day of school for Humble ISD and I tried to avoid them after starting the bike ride at 11:08 AM. (Should’ve started earlier) Riding my Cervelo Caledonia on a modified Atascocita – Walden – Indian Shores Road route I mostly succeeded. When I got to Kingwood Park High School traffic was heavy but an officer motioned the cars through the intersection and I went with them. Later crossing Kingwood Drive another officer waved the east bound traffic continuously without allowing the cross traffic to move even when the lanes were stopped. I inched out and rode across during one of the traffic backups. I’m not sure what good the officer did only allowing east bound cars to move. They would’ve done that without him.
Once I passed that bottleneck no more school traffic problems. I thought my legs were getting tired because I couldn’t build up speed but the wind strengthened after the ride started coming from the SE at 14 mph with 18 mph gusts. I took advantage of the wind on the way back from Indian Shores Road increasing my speed and overall average speed. I claimed the Strava Local Legend on Bridge Drag Reverse (2:30).
Weather: Start 85 degrees, humidity 74%, dew point 76.0, mostly cloudy, wind SE 7 mph; Finish 90 degrees, humidity 65%, dew point 76.2, mostly cloudy, wind SE 14 mph gusts 18 mph. I used my CamelBak for hydration and a few ice cubes were left when I finished at 2:31 PM.
It was October 12th, 2023, the last time I rode this route. That ride was 40.23 miles and today I biked 39.40 miles. May is the most miles (917.68) in a month since last October’s 934.28. If the weather cooperates tomorrow I could beat October.
