Too Ambitious, Too Optimistic. Washed Out After 2 Rain Stops, Bike Ride Doomed
Too ambitious for the weather conditions. Washed out after two stops. At the start of today’s bike ride I stated the route plan in the video: Atascocita – Walden – Huffman. By 7 miles into the ride that plan looked dubious at best. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike moving off at 11:11 AM. I delayed the start to let the streets dry some from an earlier rain but the sky looked promising. I thought promising “good” but instead it turned to promising “bad”, rain. I ran into light rain on Valley Manor Drive nearing Kingwood Drive. I rode to the old HEB store and took shelter from the rain. After a short period of time the rain stopped and the sky looked okay, still gray clouds though. I rode south with the next decision point at Kingwood Greens Drive and W. Lake Houston Parkway. When I got there the street was barely damp and no cars from the south were using their windshield wipers. I turned right onto W. Lake Houston Parkway to bike to Kings River Drive and make another decision. As happens frequently, half way across the bridge it started to rain, lightly at first and when I got to the traffic light it rain full blast. In the left turn lane with a red light I got soaked even more. I dashed across W. Lake Houston Parkway to the security building for Kings Lake Estates for shelter. The rain continued for awhile and when it slowed I went back to W. Lake Houston Parkway to bike north. I made it to Kings Harbor without more rain. Optimistic I kept riding into the rain and took shelter at Third Coast Bank. The rain moved on and I left going north. No more rain to the finish. Not long after I wiped the Canyon off and went inside it started raining again. Maybe Watopia would’ve been a better route!
