Bob Hake’s journey across the USA from September 2023 to November 2023
#1: Day 30: 10/23/23 Kerrville to Johnson City,TX By sedona_rocks on Mon 23 Oct 2023 19:01 (US/Pacific) Reply Rating: (0) We woke up to on and off drizzle, again a first for this tour. After hitting McDonald’s I was off on another hilly, breezy ride in mid Texas. The road was quite slippery in some spots at the beginning so I had to treat it like riding on black ice. Eventually the road dried out and it was no longer a problem. We went through Fredericksburg around lunch time and it looked like a very good town with lots of stuff to do. It is known for its wineries and German restaurants. I think it is on the list of places to come back to someday. We passed grassy fields, rocky fields, pastures and lots of livestock. Some of the cows were in the road nearly blocking our way. There were a lot more up and downs than I was expecting and the wind was not favorable. We have been riding for 1 month and by my calculations have gone 1682.8 miles. In that month we have gotten to know each other pretty well. We are staying in a beat up RV park outside of Johnson City tonight. The wind is picking up and it looks like it will rain on and off through the night. Tomorrow we ride into Austin.

Day 32 – Johnson City to Austin, TX: Rain ?
Tuesday October 24, 2023, 51 miles (82 km) – Total so far: 1,760 miles (2,832 km) I don’t know where the weather is coming from here in central Texas, but it is not being kind to us. Some are saying that is is coming from the remnants of Hurricane Norma that just got Mexico. Last night the wind really blew. We were in the tent and I just put in the ear plugs and had a good night. But many said the tent noises kept them up all night. This morning we had gray skies again but no rain. That all changed as we got to riding today. The closer we got to Austin the worst things got.
Rain would come and go all day. It wasn’t a hard rain, but the wind was blowing so badly that the rain actually got you quite hard. I did get wet and would dry a bit and then it would start raining again. I still made pretty good time and arrived in Austin about 1:30. It was a little harder getting into Austin than it had been getting into other big cities that we have traveled through. The roads seemed to be busy with …
