Long Sleeve Jersey, Strong Wind, Fall Arrived
Just like the weather forecast said it was “chilly” this morning when I got up. By that I mean 65 degrees. As I waited for the temperature to go up a few degrees I ate breakfast and watched the Il Lombardia bike race from Italy. It looked to be warmer there. After the race ended I started getting ready for today’s bike ride. With the “chilly” weather I was going to wear a long sleeve jersey for the first time since spring as far as I can remember. No ant problem to delay me this morning as I wheeled the Cervelo Caledonia bike out of the back door. I hit the Bolt computer start button at 10:27 AM and the ride began. The wind chilled my legs as the long sleeve jersey and short sleeve jersey kept my upper body reasonably warm. It took about 15 minutes of riding for my legs to forget about the coolness and get about their business. The wind was out of the north at 14 mph with 24 mph gusts. This would later be a problem biking east over Lake Houston on FM 1960. I needed to make up some of the lost miles from the rain so I chose the Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman route thinking it would be around 37 miles. It turned out to be 39.96 miles today versus the typical Saturday rides’ 33 miles. For the route this was the average distance for the 2 previous rides on this route in 2023. Month to date I’ve biked 150.3 miles, or 21% of my 700 mile goal for October. I’m a little behind the pace to get there. By the time I finished at 1:37 PM the temperature warmed up to 73 degrees and the wind slowed to 12 mph with 18 mph gusts. I didn’t really notice the difference in the wind.
