Galveston Beach Access 32 to Seawall Pleasure Pier And Back
I drove to Galveston for today’s bike ride. Going south on I-45 I went through several places with wet roads and wondered if that would be waiting for me on the island. Exiting I-45 at 61st Street the traffic was light as I made my way to Seawall Blvd. The ride would start at Beach Access 32 on the west end of the island. FM 3005 took me there where I parked the Jeep and unloaded all my gear. From Beach Access 32 the ride went NE on FM 3005 to Stewart Road where I turned left. Stewart Road doesn’t have as much traffic as FM 3005 and avoids the tiny shoulder on FM 3005 east of Jamaica Beach and the Galveston Island State Park entrance. Construction on the power lines beside Stewart Road reduced the road to single lanes. The flagmen signaled me through the work zones nicely. Passed the work areas at 14.2 miles Stewart Road added a bike lane and concrete instead of asphalt. At 81st Street I rode to the Seawall and rode on it to just past the Pleasure Pier where I turned around for the ride back. All of the way to that point had been into a headwind (21 miles) and I looked forward to the tailwind on the way back to Beach Access 32. In Jamaica Beach I stopped at the Circle K store for cold Gatorade because my CamelBak water was warm. Sitting in the shade I rested while drinking it. Back on the Cervelo it was a little over 6 miles to where I parked the Jeep. I started at 11:14 AM and finished at 2:56 PM. The tailwind on the way back was delightful as I increased my overall average speed to 13.0 mph. After the ride I drove back to Seawall Blvd. for dinner at Joe’s Crab Shack. I left Galveston after 5 PM hoping the traffic would thin out by the time I got near Houston.
