Cyclist dies in hit-and-run crash in Katy, HCSO says

KATY, Texas (KIAH) — A cyclist has died after he was hit by a car in Katy on Monday night. It happened around 10:30 p.m. at the 990 block of South Mason Road.
Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said when EMS crews arrived, they found a man down on the right shoulder with a bicycle.
Preliminary information shows the man was riding the bike in the far right-hand lane, when he was hit by a passing car. The driver didn’t stop, leaving the scene and the cyclist. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division is investigating and asking any witnesses to come forward with any information.

KATY, Texas (KTRK) – A driver who hit and killed a bicyclist in Katy is being sought after deputies say the suspect took off without helping.
The deadly crash happened at 11:22 p.m. Monday in the 900 block of South Mason Road near Cimarron Parkway.
Harris County sheriff’s deputies said a driver in a possible Ford pickup truck was traveling southbound in the outside lane when they failed to pass to the left safely and struck the bicyclist from behind.

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Downtown Wichita Falls served as the concourse for the finale of the 42nd Hotter ‘N Hell: ending the weekend with several criterium races.
These races are different from the traditional ones, race director Pablo Cruz explained these races are self-paced competitions. “It’s a race based on time, and it’s usually in a short circuit that runs around a mile, a mile and a half long,” said Pablo Cruz. “Laps are superfast. They take about one and a half minutes. So it’s pretty fast.”

Bright and early on Saturday, Sept. 16, hundreds of cyclists are expected to meet in Greenville and fill the square by the Hunt County Courthouse to begin the 27th annual Cotton Patch Challenge bike ride.
Boasting 10 different routes that range from six- and 12-mile “leisure” routes to advanced 76- and 100-mile treks, the Cotton Patch Challenge will start at 8 a.m. by the courthouse, with check-in starting at 6:30 a.m. in front of the Landon Winery. There’s something heart-warming about the anarchy of 2,000 people on bikes reclaiming the roads back from cars.
Like many, I picked up cycling during the early months of the pandemic. At first, it was simply a way to forget, at least for an hour or so, that the world outside seemed to be collapsing—a collapse that was starting to feel incredibly boring when watched from the relative safety of my hermetically sealed home. Those first months of cycling, my long-unexercised legs would turn to Jell-O around the five-mile mark, and I would defeatedly slow-pedal my way back home. After a while, though, I built up more stamina, and my weekly bike rides turned into daily occurrences, my distance increasing with each ride. By the time a year rolled around, I had ridden 1,500 miles in the Houston area—about the same distance as between Houston and Los Angeles.
