From Near Triple Digit Heat To Zwift’s Watopia Waistband
Driving home from church the Jeep’s dashboard thermometer read 100 degrees and then “cooled” to 98 when I pulled into the driveway. It was about 12:45 PM when I went inside. Yesterday during the bike ride I thought about what i could do if the temperature was that hot. Should I ride outside, not ride, or ride Zwift. The last time I rode Zwift was March 20th. Since then Zwift updates changed a number of things and maybe this was a good time to check them out. I signed into Zwift yesterday to install any updates and be ready for today. Zwift is my solution for cold or wet weather and now a very hot day too.
After changing into bike clothes I opened Zwift and attempted to connect the phone companion app but that didn’t work. Checking the WiFi network on my phone it was connected to a different one. I fixed that but still not connecting. I restarted my phone and after a few minutes the companion app connected. Using the 25km free trial I selected the Watopia’s Waistband route and started riding. Only about 5,000 people were online so the course wasn’t very crowded. I decided to ride about 15 to 17 mph and stop when I got close to the 25km distance. I made one off course turn and rode up Titan’s Grove. I should’ve not made that turn and kept on the flatter route. The ride covered 11.99 miles. I sweated a lot.
This closed out the week of biking with 234.19 miles. I rode very bike I own this week thanks to adding the Zwift ride. The Zwift miles don’t count towards my August goal but does for the Strava Year Progressions. 2023 leads all years from 2011 to 2022 with 6,019 miles year to date. Road miles YTD total 5,343, Zwift miles 680.7.
