More people using bikes with record-high gas prices, but Lubbock cyclists are running into issues

LUBBOCK, Texas- A local bike shop said on Tuesday that it’s seen an increase in customers following record-high fuel prices, but cyclists are running into problems around town.
“There’s a lot of people, particularly with the prices of gasoline, wanting to ride their [bikes] to work, class, school…” said Greg Davis, the owner of DFC Cycles and Fitness.
The only problem is… Lubbock is not bike-friendly, according to Davis, even though the city has had a pedestrian and bicycle master plan in the works for years.
The projects are slow-moving and sometimes impractical, he said.

ROBINSON, Texas (KWTX) – A neighborhood watch group bought a new bicycle for a local Dairy Queen employee after he posted online that his was stolen from his front porch and it was his only way to get to work.
James Penadela, 63, lost his job and his car at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic but he’s been able to work at the Robinson Dairy Queen for the last few months by riding his bike.
When he woke up on Wednesday, June 1, he immediately realized the bike he depends on was gone.
“I said to my roommate, ‘where’s my bike? It’s gone,’” James said, “I was very mad.”

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash early Tuesday morning which left a man riding a bicycle dead.
The crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on Potranco Road near Sundance Crest.
Deputies told KSAT 12 that the driver of a Jeep was traveling westbound along Potranco Road when it struck a man who was crossing the street in the main lanes. The man died at the scene.
BCSO said the man was across the street from the main entrance to a subdivision on a part of a sidewalk when he crossed in front of the vehicle.

The Better Bike Share Partnership (BBSP) awarded $75,040 in grants to nine projects that will reach and engage traditionally underserved populations through shared micromobility.
