Editorial: Harris County is right to use toll road money for trails that link communities
The Editorial Board | www.houstonchronicle.com
For decades, the Harris County Toll Road Authority has been building bigger and better highways for drivers to move through and around the county’s neighborhoods. Now, in a welcome if long overdue shift, the county-owned authority has won approval to spend millions to help people who live in those areas move around the toll roads, and elsewhere, without ever turning on their ignition.
Harris County commissioners voted 3-2 along partisan lines to OK $53 million for the first phase of a roughly $600 million plan to build hike-and-bike trails near four key toll roads.
“The toll road for a long time has been focused on finishing its system,” …

The Ride of Silence In Abilene Brings Attention To “Share The Road”
Rudy Fernandez | 1470kyyw.com
When I first heard the term "Ride of Silence" I didn’t really know what it was. However, the second time I was confronted with the term "Ride of Silence" was when an acquaintance named Jill Christie with the Texas Department of Transportation was explaining to me what the ride was all about.
So as the ride comes to Abilene, I thought it would be a great idea to share what the ride is all about. So here goes, in 2003 the first Ride of Silence took place in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex after a nationally known amateur cyclist named Larry Schwartz had been killed when he was riding his bicycle and was hit by a school bus on a wide-open empty road.
On the first Ride of Silence around the …

Palm Springs cyclist killed on cross-country ride honored at ‘Ride of Silence’
By Jake Ingrassia | kesq.com
It is National Bike Month and local cyclists are taking to the streets in Palm Springs for a memorial ride in honor of cyclists who were killed or injured in collisions with cars.
The Ride of Silence begins at 6:30 p.m. at the south entrance of Ruth Hardy Park in Palm Springs with a group of speakers including local city leaders and biking activists.
Organizers of the event said since 2010, 35 people lost their lives to cars on local streets while riding their bikes in the valley.
Last month, Palm Springs residents Lauri Aylaian and Keith Culver were hit by a car in Austin, Texas, while on a cross-country bicycle ride from San Diego to Florida. Aylaian is still recovering from a leg injury; Culver died the next day from his injuries.
"We made it as far as Austin, Texas," Aylaian said. "We were a …
