The Wind Gives, The Wind Takes. New Caney – Gene Campbell Blvd Bike Ride
I watched the final stage of the Tour of The Alps as the racers rode in the rain. The roads were slick but no crashes while I watched. No rain here but wind awaited me when I started today’s bike ride. I managed to start the ride at 10:20 AM, a little earlier than yesterday. I started early enough to stop at Pat’s Donuts on FM 1314 for an apple fritter. I talk about how that turned out in the video. The bike today was my Cervelo Caledonia which reached 1,378 miles after the bike ride. I chose the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Blvd” route and rode 37.24 miles (Strava’s calculation). This pushed my week total to 186.42 and April road miles to 726.9 plus a Zwift ride for a total of 748.76. Year to date I bikes 2,715 miles on the road and Zwift. This was the third ride on this route in 2022.
Of the three rides today was the shortest distance and lowest average speed. SportTracks calculated today’s ride had the highest effort at 97. Two rides on the Cervelo and one on the Lynskey R300.
Lots of sunshine and wind. Getting to FM 1314 the wind helped or was neutral. From that point all the way back to Kingwood I pedaled into a strong headwind. My legs tried but I had to shift from the 35×13 to 35×15 gears. My speed dropped to 10 to 11 mph and my average speed went from 14.7 mph to 13.9 mph. At the start the wind was from the south at 14 mph and increased to 16 mph with 25 mph gusts during the ride. The temperature was in the upper 70’s increasing to 81 by the time I finished at 1:20 PM. Weather conditions: start 79 (humidity 76%, dew point 71), mostly cloudy, wind S 14 mph; finish 81 (humidity 63%, dew point 67), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph gusts 25 mph.
AXS.SRAM.com ride report shows 25 RD shifts, total biking time 2:57:00, 1:29:16 in the 35×15 gears, 1:07:32 in the 35×13 gears. The distance in gears swapped: 17.6 miles for 35×13 and 15.6 miles for 35×15.
I stopped in Porters Mill at the pool for a short rest and took this photo.
I claimed the Local Legend on Briar Willow to Lodge according to Strava.
