David on the Southern Tier
By David Jelmini | www.crazyguyonabike.com
Day 15: El Paso to Fort Handcock. 75’ climbing, 3:20 hrs in the saddle. First day with ACA group, so far so good.
Sunday October 3, 2021, 45 miles (72 km) – Total so far: 733 miles (1,180 km) It was great to finally start this ride. The anticipation and anxiety have been high for so long now. Started the day off with nice weather and flat roads. I eventually met up with Greg and Larry and rode together for a while before stopping to help Mattie fix a flat.
Day 16: Fort Handcock to Van Horn, Tx, 2,000’ of climbing, 5:30 hrs in saddle. Not as bad as expected
Monday October 4, 2021, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 807 miles (1,299 km) Started the day off riding with Greg and Larry from Loveland, CO. We have about the same riding style and speed so it worked well. Can’t tell you how much more pleasant it is to ride with “people “ for a change, not so lonely. The day started off with perfect weather as we meandered through the back road toward the interstate. We left camp last since Larry was on cleanup duty. Eventually caught up with people as the day progressed, moving on and off I-10, or along a frontage road. Started to feel some cramps coming on so Larry gave me some magic pills, basically potassium, which did the trick. …
Day 17: Van Horn to Fort Davis, 2150’ of climbing, 6:42 hrs in the saddle. Hard day of head winds
Tuesday October 5, 2021, 80 miles (129 km) – Total so far: 887 miles (1,427 km) The good news is we all agreed to change the route so we could eliminate 2,000’ of climbing. The new route also kept us off I-10 for 45 miles. Started off with light head winds, which was expected, that moved to moderate head winds through out the day. Highway 90 also let us experience Texas chip seal roads, which was not pleasant. …
Day 18: Layover in Fort Davis
Wednesday October 6, 2021 Spent the day relaxing, walked the town, which took about 20 minutes. Took a few photos.

Del Rio to Camp Wood
Monday October 4, 2021, 79 miles (127 km) – Total so far: 1,053 miles (1,695 km) Finally a day on the bike! I headed out after breakfast. I saw the ACA route stays away from 90 as it goes through town & thought that was great. Well, the alternate route may have been better, but it was 2 lanes each way with no shoulder at all, and I left in the midst of rush hour (or at least, the busier time of day) so I was very glad it was less than 2 miles. One guy in a bright blue car got behind me, swerved into the next lane, and almost rear-ended the car right in front of him when it actually stopped for a red light. Fun? No!
But I was soon back on 90 where there were huge shoulders. And very good pavement, too, for about 11 miles. Then back to chip seal of various levels of annoying. I stayed on 90 for about 30 miles. Plenty of cars & trucks, no traffic problems. There was one area that …

WHEELS OF LOVE: Houston cyclist Elise Sheppard takes tzedakah on the road
By AARON HOWARD | jhvonline.com
A casual conversation with a gentleman at the 2019 AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington introduced Houstonian Elise Sheppard to the Wheels of Love charity ride. Sheppard is a bicycling enthusiast, a serious, committed and regular rider. She also loves Israel.
“I had been looking for a way to get back to Israel,†Sheppard told the JHV. “Wheels of Love combined the opportunity to experience Israel on a bicycle, meet cycling enthusiasts from all over the world and pray in a cycling minyan. Plus, the 2019 Wheels of Love ride was scheduled back to back with the Houston Federation’s trip to Israel.â€
Sheppard enjoyed the ride so much that she could hardly wait to …
Circle Trail Centipede Encounters With Prickly Pear Cactus
Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com
Today my bike decided to take me north on the Circle Trail further than I have gone in a long long time.
About a mile north of Hamilton Park the Circle Trail comes to the Prickly Pear Cactus Orchard you see above. This orchard appears slightly south of where the Circle Trail crosses under Holliday Road, which you can also see in the photo above.
Going north on the Circle Trail eventually passes under a couple freeways, making for a lot of cement overhead. Soon thereafter the Circle Trail enters an undeveloped zone making it seem as if one has left the city and is out in the wild country.
Eventually the Circle Trail returns to civilization, around the point where the …
