Punched The Weather Forecast, It Punched Back
After two days of no rain when the forecast said it was going to I must’ve scoffed at the rain forecast today. I paid the price after I started the bike ride at 9:59 AM.
Since yesterday’s bike ride I had been trying to think of a different route for today. I settled on biking my “New Caney – Roman forest – Valley Ranch” route. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike.
Weather at the start looked okay but the NOAA weather app showed rain to the southwest. I figures it would go away since I rode to the north. As I biked through Elm Grove Village in Kingwood I felt light rain for a few minutes but kept on riding. A little later more light rain through Sherwood Trails. In the video you can see how that progressed while I rode into Woodridge Forest. When I reached Knox Drive going west to the I-69/US59 frontage road the sky to the north was raining. On the frontage road the water puddles signaled the rain was just ahead of me. I made it to E. Wallis Road when the rain picked up. No nearby cover so I turned right onto E. Wallis Road. At Loop 494 I found Van’s Auto Repair with a small overhang and stopped there for about 10 minutes.
Rain slowed and I moved to Loop 494 north. It was wet with standing water in places. I only made it to the next intersection, E. Martin Drive, when the rain increased. Turning left I thought there might be shelter but as I rode back to the frontage road the rain let up some. At the frontage road the road was wet but only a light rain fell. Boldly I went north but I could see rain falling ahead. I made it to Gorilla Steel when it started raining hard and stopped at their office. I waited there for almost an hour as waves of rain passed, let up for a few minutes and then hard again with a stiff wind.
I left Gorilla on wet streets with light rain and rode to the Valero station on the frontage road. I stopped there for a few minutes until the rain stopped. At that point I changed the route to “Kingwood – FM1314 – Kingwood” because the sky looked wet to the north and the frontage road in front of the new Amazon warehouse was most likely coated in mud from the construction traffic. I don’t like mud. Making the u-turn at FM 1314 I wondered when was the last time I rode this route. After finishing the ride at 12:59 PM I looked it up in SportTracks to learn it was 6/18/2018. According to my notes that ride had rain and fog. It was 18.29 miles while today I rode 21.66 miles. Last Monday I didn’t bike at all because of rain. I’ll take the 21.66 miles even if rained on. It helps get to a 200 mile week and don’t need to make up for 0 miles.
I’ll try to ride to Roman Forest on Wednesday.
