Pump Side Chats On FM 1314 With 100 Degree Heat Index
A little earlier start for today’s bike ride at 10:41 AM. I chose a northerly route on what I call “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route. After biking through Kingwood the route heads north along the I-69/US59 frontage road through Porter and New Caney6. At New Caney I go north to the u-turn under the freeway and loop back to FM 1485. Riding NW to Gene Campbell blvd I turn left there. Taking two side loops before hitting FM 1314 and then riding to the SE. Through Briar Tree, Oakhurst, and Kings Manor puts me back into Kingwood where I finish the ride at 1:53 PM after biking 37.75 miles. Those miles boost my week to 149.18 miles and July to 81.54 miles. My July goal is 800 miles. This was the 3rd time biking this route in 2021. Road construction kept me away for awhile.
While the temperature wasn’t into the 90’s the sun was hot. I stopped in Porters Mill at the pool for a couple of minutes in the shade. Later I stopped for about 10 minutes at the Circle K store at FM 1314 and Sorters Road. While there a man in an Eastex Trash Service truck offered me a bottle of cold water but I motioned to my CamelBak which still had cold water. I chatted with a Harris County Deputy Sheriff while he filled up. Then a pickup truck with a trailer pulled in and I spoke with the 2 men with it. A man in a SUV on the other side of the pump asked how far I was biking and I replied about 37 miles. Then it was time to head out.
Weather summary: start 86 (72% humidity, 75.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NW 7 mph; finish 88 (63% humidity, 74.1 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 4 mph. biking in the shade made a difference with the heat. The heat index was 100.
