Tour de Force: Meet racing pros Lauren and Mat Stephens

Lauren Stephens’ bicycle tire was flat, and she didn’t know how to change it. She took the hand-me-down vehicle to a bike shop, where Mat Stephens pawned the repair off on another employee so he could chat with the cute new customer.
“I had no idea he was flirting with me, but that’s what was happening,†Lauren says.
The two started going on group rides and have been training buddies — and life partners — ever since. After 10 years of marriage, their commitment to cycling is as strong as ever.

Getting around Westchase is getting easier.
Just outside Beltway 8 at the northern end of the Westchase District, new sidewalks and dedicated bike lanes are part of the recently reconstructed Deerwood Road, which helps connect riders to trails at Terry Hershey Park along Buffalo Bayou.

Personal: Got his start in cycling through his dad who was a professional downhill racer and rode to stay fit after he had children. One of the biggest and most unexpected stories of the 2018 Tour De France put Lawson in the news. On the first day of the tour, he crashed in the feed zone. He finished the stage with blood pouring down his face from a laceration above his eye and a broken scapula. He finished all 21 stages of the 3-week race and raised over $200,000 for the velodrome in his hometown of Houston after damage from Hurricane Harvey.
