Asphalt Check on FM 1960 In Liberty County
For today’s bike ride I thought it was time to revisit FM 1960 in Liberty County. The last time I biked there on May 11th the resurfacing crew was laying asphalt in the east bound lane about a mile inside the county line. Maybe today the project moved more to the east? Maybe the rain slowed progress? I answered those questions on the bike ride. Watch the video to see the answers.
I rolled out at 10:50 AM on my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike. The route name, “May Park Community Center – Huffman”, doesn’t really describe the roads and destination clearly. I use that name because in the past I would stop at the May Community Center for ice and water but it is closed for now. Today I stopped for ice at the convenience gas station at FM 2100 and Wolf Road on the way back to Kingwood. After biking 39.24 miles I finished at 1:54 PM. The week now totals 111.51 miles which means I still have 3 days to get 200 miles for the week. YTD 2021 still trails 2020 by 159 miles. 2020 was a busy biking year. May is up to 711.94 miles. I have 4 potential biking days to get to 800 miles.
Rain probability was low today though all of the big fluffy clouds seemed to say moisture is still around. It’s starting to heat up and I may need to start using my CamelBak hydration pack but today I just had 1 bottle. Weather conditions for the bike ride: start 83 (69% humidity, 71.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph; finish 86 (64% humidity, 72.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 12 mph. The wind wasn’t too bad since the route included a lot of east/west roads minimizing the headwind exposure.
When I stopped at the traffic light in Huffman a policeman working with the construction crew asked how many miles I ride per day and I replied about 35. I told him today might be 40. At the turn around point on FM 1960 I talked with the flagman about the road. Both were friendly men.
My legs felt good today for the longest ride this week, so far.
On the return I stopped at the Kings River pool for a few minutes in the shade and to drink the ice water from the convenience store. Before getting back on the Canyon I took these photos.
