Riverside Ride and Kidz Fest peddles good times for all ages in Victoria
By Chase Rogers | www.victoriaadvocate.com
This year’s annual Riverside Ride in Victoria drew dozens of biking connoisseurs from the region like past years, but Shannon Longoria was poised to shake it up for the event’s 13th year.
“We wanted to get the kids out and into the sun and fresh air,†the Kiwanis Club vice president said over the live music and soft hum of attendees at DeLeon Plaza on Saturday. “We are all about kids at the Kiwanis Club, so it made sense to make this event all about kids also. …

March 2021: Getting Ready
Friday March 12, 2021 OK, we’re about one week out from the start of our Southern Tier ride. I’m so excited to be going, and couldn’t be happier that I get to start the trip with my son and (hopefully) end the trip with my wife. There could also be other surprise guests along the route (keeping my fingers crossed for a Batman drop-in). If all goes well, Jeffrey will accompany me from San Diego to El Paso, TX over the first two weeks of the ride. After that, I plan to ride solo until getting to eastern Mississippi, where Heidi and I plan to meet up. From there, we are planning on approx. 7 days to cross Florida and reach the Atlantic Ocean.
I had a few options when planning this trip, but chose to follow ACA’s Southern Tier route due to a combination of timing, distance and weather. The timing was essential as I knew that I would be in a career change during MAR-APR so this would be …
Travel Day to San Diego
Saturday March 20, 2021, 9 miles (14 km) – Total so far: 9 miles (14 km) …And the trip has officially begun! We made it safely out of Virginia this morning and arrived in San Diego by 1pm local time. From there, it was over to the hotel to unpack and assemble the bikes and then go for a quick test ride to the ocean. Jeffrey’s bike looks great, while I have to make some minor adjustments to the rear derailleur on mine as some of my gears were slipping on the test ride. Oh, and we had an opportunity to test the climbing gears in San Diego too – Hill St. over by Sunset Cliffs was very appropriately named!
We were met today by one of Jeffrey’s best friends Jake and his girlfriend Leslie. They live out here and …

Day 17: Las Cruces – El Paso (50 miles)
Wednesday March 17, 2021 We started the day by shaking the pounds of sand out of out tents. The night was exceptionally cold, and the 40 mph winds blew sand everywhere. The ride today was easy and weather was beautiful. Slowly, we are losing the scenery of Arizona and New Mexico for the flatlands of Texas. Another flat change on the roadside, this time for Jon. That didn’t slow us down as we kept moving swiftly down the roads and bike path. The “Rio Grande†we crossed several times and rode along could use some water otherwise the kayaks won’t be useful at all. A quick stop at a bike shop in El Paso then on the …
Day 18: Rest Day
Thursday March 18, 2021 A well deserved rest day in El Paso, TX gives us a chance to rest our legs and be on the lookout for more tacos. We started the day by working on our bikes. Jon, getting a new chain, rear derailleur cable and some brake pads. Nicholas, only needed a cleaning of his chain and a brake adjustment. George, Mike and myself only needed some cleaning and chain lube.
Then it was time to get serious. Nicholas, went through his 1 million items in his panniers and was able to shed 10 pounds of gear. A short walk to the post office, followed by a stop for some tacos. Then it was Nicks idea to …
Day 19: El Paso – Sierra Blanca (96 miles)
Friday March 19, 2021 Today was a tough ride. 96 miles into a headwind the entire way. Luckily, Mike “The Machine†Dieterle was able to pull us along the way. So far, Texas is not impressive to look at. The route took us on frontage roads that pass through several goat towns now, mostly due to the nearby interstate. The roads are mostly used by boarder patrol vehicles. Twice today we came upon a lady in distress. She is a 76 year old lady riding the southern tier with …

Denton’s big cleanup is coming in smaller doses this year
By Justin Grass | dentonrc.com
As part of Keep Denton Beautiful’s 33rd annual Great American Cleanup, the A-train Rail Trail got a weekend face-lift, with Bike Denton volunteers removing about a dozen trash bags’ worth of litter Saturday morning.
Typically, Denton’s cleanup is held as a single-day event, but this year’s runs the entire month of March. Carly Weld, program and volunteer coordinator for Keep Denton Beautiful, said the change is helping distance groups and spread out supplies and tools — such as litter tongs, gloves and bags — more efficiently.
“The idea is straightforward — in Denton, we clean up roadways, waterways, parks and …
