123 Days of Summer Ends. Breakout Cold Wear Gear
I try to not lead off with the weather but it dominates today’s bike ride. Around 9 AM I noticed the temperature going down and the wind picking up. The front Space City Weather wrote about arrived. I got ready to ride but I brought out some of my “cold weather” clothing: leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, and wind jacket. I needed them for the 11:04 AM start but by the 1:15 PM finish the temperature actually rebounded from 68 to 72 but the wind didn’t let up.
Yesterday I wore summer bike kit clothes.
Because of the strong wind I decided to ride what I label the “Kingwood – Community Drive-Valley Ranch” route. Heading north into the 15 mph wind and 22 mph gusts required strong pedaling. I glanced at the Lezyne Macro Plus computer at times to see how much power it took to keep the Canyon Endurace moving. Sometimes the watts exceeded 200 for several seconds. Fortunately the route included some west facing sections tallow my legs to recover before hitting the headwind again. At Community Drive I turned back to the south and the strong wind became a tailwind. I don’t know if the tailwind canceled all of the energy to get there but it came close. Weather: start 68 (88% humidity, 64.3 dew point), overcast, wind N 15 mph gusts 22 mph. Finish 72 (77% humidity, 64 dew point), overcast, wind N 23 mph.
The ride totaled 26.43 miles, improving September’s total miles to 731.73 padding my goal breaking. Two more potential biking days to add more miles.
