Formulating A Bike Route In The Heat
I began formulating today’s bike route while eating breakfast and watching the Criterium du Dauphine race in France (I wasn’t in France). I remembered a route I did recently but had left out a portion so today I decided to ride the whole route, “Oakhurst – Cumberland – Valley Ranch”. After the race ended I got ready to ride and started at 10:28 AM. The last time I rode this route was October 20th, 2019. The streets and roads are part of other routes but most of today was in the opposite direction. Today’s bike ride covered 32.57 miles, 3/10 of a mile longer than the October 20th ride. This pushed the week’s total to 190.06 miles, setting up another 200+ mile week if I ride tomorrow (Saturday) which I plan on doing.
The forecast calls for another hot day getting up to 99 degrees and a heat index approaching 110. I finished at 12:58 PM before the brunt of the heat arrived but it was still hot. In the last 2 days I had a question from two people about the empty water bottle cage on my bikes and what did I do for water while riding in the heat. My CamelBak does a better job keeping water cold and lasting the whole ride without stopping at a store for refills (COVID-19 caution). Today after the ride I emptied the CamelBak and ice came out; that would not happen using a bottle and I use the CamelBak Podium Chill bottles with insulation. Weather at the start and finish: start 90 (67% humidity, 77.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 9 mph. Finish 95 (56% humidity, 77.3 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 9 mph.
I am over halfway to my mileage goal for August. Below is a recap of where I stand. I added a column showing if I am ahead or behind.
My legs had more energy today even though the wind was a little stronger. Strava said my ride was consistent with my usual efforts. Link to my Strava ride activity page.
Golden Cheetah likes to use color displaying the ride summary while SportTracks likes a lot of white.
