New Asphalt, No Detour on Spring Creek Greenway
After writing about route variety yesterday today I rode the Spring Creek Greenway. I usually ride the greenway once a month but biking there more than that may be a good way to get variety. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike today starting at 9:51 AM, somehow I got on the road before 10 AM. So far in 2020 I biked Spring Creek Greenway 6 times. Today the route went 45.22 miles, the longest try this year. I was back home at 1:42 PM.
One of the advantages of the greenway is the extensive shade which comes in handy on a sunny day like today. The wind wasn’t strong enough among the trees to present much of a headwind. Biking the greenway is different from streets and roads. On roads and streets you change direction, stop for traffic lights, and get out in the open where wind can get at you. On the greenway biking seems slower but there are few stops so I pedal much more and resting not as much. I think cyclists who have not ridden there might be surprised how hard it can be over the distance from US59 to I-45. I think my overall average speed of 13.0 mph reflects some of the effect of biking on the greenway. Many twists and turns plus the 15 mph speed limit add to the difference biking there.
I think there were more bikes out today which may be the result of the construction being gone at the Carter Park trailhead area.
I drank most of my CamelBak water by the time I finished. It stayed cold until about mile 40 when the heat took over from the shade. Weather conditions: start 88 (78% humidity, 80.1 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 5 mph. Finish 93 (62% humidity, 78.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph. I took a short rest stop at John Pundt Park on the return leg to eat a Clif Bar and drink some cool water. Later at Carter Park trailhead I stopped for a restroom break.
The GoPro Hero 7 Black camera froze two times when I wanted to take video. Pulling the battery out got it started again. I am beginning to wonder if the microSD card might be the problem. I will try a different one.
I earned three 2nd place ribbons for my ride on Strava. Link to my activity page on Strava.
