Route Variety Needs Spice, A New Road, Advancing Toward My Goal
Biking almost every day makes finding a variety of routes challenging. Today was no exception as I started at 10:02 AM riding my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike. I chose what I label the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route and rode 35.64 miles. I discovered a tiny variation on Monday and repeated it today. A new subdivision opened a month ago with a new road where dirt existed before. Kelly Road was a pot holed street ending at the edge prior to this new development but now a new asphalt section connects between E. Knox St. and E. Martin Drive to the north. This comes in handy because at E. Martin Drive a traffic light helps riding across Loop 494. The video includes a clip about this.
Getting closer to my 800 mile goal for August continues with today’s mileage. My total miles for August now stands at 144.07. To reach my goal I need to average 25.8 miles every day of the month. For the 5th day my total should be 5 x 25.8 or 129 miles. I am ahead of that by 15 miles or 28.8 miles average per day. To allow for weather I need to build a cushion of miles.
Weather impacts biking in several ways. Today the temperature went up as the ride progressed but the wind stayed about the same. I drank most of the ice water my CamelBak held by the 12:46 PM finish. I sat on my patio for several minutes after the ride in the shade enjoying a breeze at times. Weather conditions: start 88 (78% humidity, 79.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind W 7 mph. Finish 93 (59% humidity, 76.3 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 7 mph.
As I wrote earlier route variety when I start from the same place is challenging. Today marks the 17th time on this route in 2020 putting it near almost number 1 after the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. 13 times on my Canyon Endurace bike and 4 times on my Lynskey R300 bike. I know where the bumps and dips are along the route though. Yesterday I rode some streets in reverse and while I know the bumps and dips going the other direction they changed in the reverse. Golden Cheetah produces a chart of the routes showing count and bike.
Today’s route lands in the upper left below a route I ride less often and above one I ride more often. I am not sure how the position gets determined.
