Zwift Joy Ride With Big Hills, Joyful All The Way Up
As the weather forecast said a cold front arrived as I got ready to begin today’s Zwifting. The temperature dropped from 78 degrees at 11:40 AM to 57 degrees when I finished at 1:05 PM. Good decision to stay inside and sweat it out on the Wahoo Kickr Snap smart trainer.
I chose the SZR Evening Joy Ride following the 2019 UCI Worlds Harrogate Circuit. I registered in the “E” category thinking it wouldn’t be too hard. That was a wrong thought. 6% to 10% climbs appeared throughout the ride raising the question of why call this a joy ride? For me it was joy because the weather outside turned chilly below my 60 degree threshold.
Before the ride began I opened the Wahoo Utility app on my phone and activated ERG mode. ERG mode makes efforts more real, supposedly. After riding the circuit today I think the hills became very real. But that aside, the hills allowed me to catch up to the peloton when I fell behind. A few times I slowed down going up the climb because the fence appeared and I didn’t want to go pass it. I managed to not go through the fence one time during the ride; maybe a first unless I rode at the back.
The group today was less than 100 and sometimes I was at the back and other times near the front. According to Strava I set 3 personal records. 77 segments in Strava for this route, many of them climbs. A lot of segments in 15.13 miles.
Tuesday’s weather points to another ride in Zwift; cold and windy.
