Rain Forecast Busted, Hike and Bike Trail, Bike Ride
The forecasted rain produced .02″ at my home and this did not inhibit my going for a bike ride at 11:25 AM. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route and rode 32.85 miles bumping my May total to 844.47 miles, the highest month total since August 2018.
Weather during the bike ride: start 85 (74% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph gusts 16 mph. Finish 89 (65% humidity), overcast, wind N13 mph. I wore shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves. As I made my way back to Kingwood the sky to the south contained some dark gray clouds and when I got home and checked the weather radar the front that went through this morning looks like it is coming back to the north.
The wind was strong enough to keep my tired legs from powering me fast enough to get my average speed up to 14 mph. Once I got on FM 1960 and rode west the wind wasn’t a problem and I got up to 16 mph.
Recently I altered this route by riding on Wild Violet Drive instead of Harvest Glen Drive in Atascocita. The county is building a hike and bike trail along the drainage bayou and today I stopped and took these photos.
The fancy benches with the trail name cut into the back call this the Atascocita Hike and Bike. I thought it strange that there is no entrance where I took the photos. On a ride in the future I will get on the trail and see where it goes.
Kingwood High School let out early and my ride along Kingwood Drive on the way to Atascocita was among the students walking to the east. They were friendly and allowed me to pass once they noticed me.
I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for ice and water. Walking inside the store the new owners have changed the layout with the cashier now behind thick glass and a different color on the walls. This is the first time I stopped in many months.
The ride back to Kingwood had a good pace and I finished the ride at 2:05 PM. Strava told me “This was easier than your usual effort.”
Friday’s weather might include rain but it will be scattered and biking the last day of May looks possible.
