Ride of Silence takes on special meaning after tragedies

For participants in the annual Permian Basin Ride of Silence, this year’s event carries extra weight. The 14-mile bicycle ride will be held three weeks after a crash that resulted in the deaths of two local cyclists and injuries to a third, Jason Haislip.
“The ride is intended to recognize those who have been killed in different bicycle accidents,†Haislip told the Reporter-Telegram. “We do this every year to recognize those and bring awareness in the community.â€
Wednesday’s event will open with preparations near the University of Texas of the Permian Basin CEED building. The ride is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., and participants are asked not to exceed 12 mph. …
