Pam LeBlanc | fitness.blog.austin360.com
Welcome to National Bike Month, when we cyclists gloat non-stop about how pedaling to work beats sitting in traffic in a car.
But seriously. It does.
I started riding a bicycle to work as a result of a commuter challenge hosted by the city 13 or 14 years ago. I got caught up in the mania, and somehow by …

FHWA Workshops: Designing for Bicyclist Safety Course Description
Participants will learn why we include bicycle travel accommodations in the transportation network; understand key safety principles for bicyclists; and learn about design treatments, safety countermeasures, and the latest national guidance and best practices. We will discuss design features for a safer and more comfortable bike riding experience on shoulders, shared lanes, bike lanes, and separated bike lanes. We will also discuss safety countermeasures for intersections and other conflict points. The training will provide participants with information on various tools that are available to analyze and evaluate safety. The course will include a bicycle ride to view nearby bicycle facilities and experience the roadway from the point-of-view of the bicyclist. The bicycle ride will be suitable for riders with less experience and a bicycle can be provided for those needing one. There is no registration cost for this course.

A Word From Our Director………. John Long.
John Long | bikehouston.org
Yesterday I spoke with Ujjal Bhattacharjee on the phone. It was heart-wrenching. Four days earlier he ate lunch with his wife, Sudipta Roy, near his lab at Rice University. Afterward, she left him for the short bike ride back to the Med-Center where she worked. She barely made it off the Rice campus before she was crushed by a dump truck. As I write this Ujjal is on a plane, transporting Sudipta’s body back to India.
This personal tragedy is a profound failure by the city of Houston — not just the city government and its various departments, but by all of us. We at BikeHouston must push …
