99 Degrees on the May Park Community Center – Huffman Bike Ride
I rode south and east today on the “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route. In my quest for 200+ miles biking this week I added 39.55 miles to the effort bringing the week’s total to 110 miles. I saw another biker in Kingwood Greens around 6 miles into the ride. We waved as we passed in opposite directions. From then on I was the only bicyclist on the route. I did ride a few seconds in Liberty County at the turnaround point on FM1960.
Earlier this morning I watched the team time trial at the Volta a Burgos and then a few kilometers of the Tour de Portugal. My goal was to start the ride before 11 AM and I was successful, hitting the start button on the Elemnt at 10:54. Even with a somewhat early start it was already hot with my home weather station showing 94 degrees. When I finished riding at 2:22 it had moved up to 98 degrees. When it is hot like this a breeze helps to evaporate the sweat and cool me down. There were times when that happened but a tailwind does not provide the same effect.
The rest stop came at 28.3 miles and 12:58 when I reached the Huffman Chevron. The shade and light breeze felt good as I drank some blue Powerade, ate a Clif bar and some Fig Newtons.
I sat on some newspaper while I ate. The paper towels tried to soak up all of the sweat but it the end the breeze fixed that. When I got ready to leave the newspaper was soaked and the towels were like limp noodles. I rolled away from the station at 1:33 for the 11+ miles to home. The wind was coming from the left front quarter and I had to pedal hard. I have noticed since the repairs on the Stradalli the pedaling doesn’t seem to be as difficult and I can get my average speed up sooner in the ride. Today the maximum average speed was 14.8 mph
More hot and dry weather tomorrow. I am not sure when I will ride because I have a 9:30 appointment at the appraisal district to protest the valuation on our house. Maybe I will state my case quickly, get the results I want and return without a long drawn affair.
