450 A/C Bike Ride to Roman Forest and Back
I jumbled up the streets at the beginning and end of today’s ride on the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route. Exiting Kingwood via Mills Brnach Drive and Ford Road I saw my nephew mowing the grass on Ford Road and stopped to talk. We had a good visit and then I was back riding again. Saturday morning traffic (I left home at 10:27) was not too bad on Mills Branch and Ford Road which do not have any shoulder. Everyone gave me room as they passed. With the slightly different streets I biked 34.22 miles today.
The earlier start came about by not watching the morning stage at the Tour de Suisse though I did watch the Route de Sud which started earlier.
On Loop 494 the shoulder was back though it narrows when it comes to important cross streets with turn lanes. Again the traffic was not a problem with me riding on the shoulder. At Roman Forest Blvd. I wanted to check out how Windy Summit Drive exited back to Roman Forest Blvd. I went south on Tavola Drive to Windy Summit and then left. I noticed Windy Summit before when I biked into Roman Forest and now I know how it goes.
With the heat I stopped at the Mobil station in New Caney at FM1485 and US59 for ice and water. I didn’t stay there long because I was going to take my longer rest break at the Stripes station at FM1314. It was about 5 miles from the Mobil station to Stripes. I arrived at Stripes 24 miles into the ride at 12:28. These are the Elemnt screens when I arrived.
One of the features of the Wahoo Elemnt is custom pages. The second screen is a custom page I created after yesterday’s ride. It replicates the Edge 520 page I used. The figures are larger than the first screen. I went inside Stripes for Gatorade to drink with the Clif bar I brought with me. Even in the shade it was hot and the paper towels I got were wet in a few seconds. The Greensheet newspaper was soaked when I stood up getting ready to leave. A man pulled up to the pump I was at as I was finishing my drink. We talked about the heat and I told him about 450 A/C, 4 windows down and driving 50 mph. We laughed and he wished me a safe ride. It was 1:03 when I rolled up to the FM1314 traffic light on the way home.
I rode through Auburn Trails instead of Oakhurst to US59 and then stayed on the service road to Kingwood Drive. Making the u-turn under US59 I was into the last 5 or 6 miles to home. The pace was slower now riding on residential streets with frequent stop signs but there some shade. The ride ended at 1:49 at our mailbox and I made my way to the garage and inside the house, ready for some cool air conditioning.
The weather at my home when I finished.
I am passed the 50% point on my way to June’s 975 mile goal with 491 miles so far. I biked 220.26 miles this week.
Sunday’s weather forecast has a 50% chance of rain in the middle of the day. I may not get to bike on Father’s Day. A rest day is okay.
