We had a good EconoLodge breakfast this morning including a Texas shaped waffle, then we were in the saddle at 8:00. We stopped just up the road to photo the iconic art deco Conoco station, built in 1936 & maintained as it was then. Inside the cafe there are mannequins posed as a waitress & customer, & the 30’s decor is preserved. A fun way to start the day on the Main St. of America as it was then.
The morning was overcast, but it was pleasant riding through the wildflowers & open grasslands. We saw small pink morning glories, a bright lavendar thistle-like plant but without the needles, white poppy-like flowers, & multiple yellow flowers including sunflowers, coreopsis and others. I was moved to hum, since I don’t know how all the words, “Yellow Rose of Texas.” Other than the …

Our low budget motel last night was right next to the VW Slug Bug Ranch, a display of five vintage beetles buried half way, nose down in the dirt – a tongue-in-cheek blue collar version of the famous Cadillac Ranch we would see today. American kitsch rules! We were up early, ate our one Honey Bun with coffee continental breakfast, & were on the road at 7:45.
