Mark Stough – the Roadrunner: 2nd Ride Across Texas
I was born in San Antonio Texas and graduated from Sam Houston High School in 1981. I attended San Antonio College and transferred to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) where I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (1988) and went to work for Kelly AFB in January 1989. I also married my beautiful wife in January 1989. We have two super kids, Danyelle Bazan (age 22) and Nathan Stough (age 20) and a great son-in-law, James Bazan. Around 3 years ago, Dave Duncan invited me to ride in his cycling club and I’ve stuck with it. I enjoy riding, but with 47 acres to maintain, I don’t get to ride nearly enough. This is my second year to ride across Texas and I won’t be in as good a shape as I was last year. The abundant rains have kept me off my bike riding a lawn mower and tractor instead. I’m relieved that …

Day 51: Shepherd to Silsbee: A morphing of time
Saturday May 28, 2016
You know when you’re stoned and time stretches on forever? Well that’s what today was like. I left the campsite around 8 and was WAY too hyper off coffee because I made it WAY too strong so the first hour I was flying. I was having a blast listening to credence and singing along, the music fit perfectly with the scenery as I passed by flooded hardwood forests, near the edge of the big thicket. Then, about two hours in, I crashed HARD. I’ve never had such a profound caffeine crash, I felt kinda queezy, so I stopped at a gas station and forced myself to drank a ton of water and ate some nuts and started feeling better about an hour after that. I stopped in a cafe/store in Honey Island and talked to the two ladies working there, one was my age and the other about my mothers age. I asked them where the name Honey Island came …

Abilene cyclists make stop in Abilene (Kansas)
By Loretta Fulton
www.reporternews.com
A week after leaving Abilene, a group of Hardin-Simmons and McMurry university students arrived in Abilene.
They weren’t traveling in a circle. Instead, they pedaled their bicycles to Abilene, Kansas, the midway point to their final destination — Canada’s border with Minnesota. The bikers, students and former students in the Leadership Studies Program taught by HSU’s Coleman Patterson, left Abilene, Texas, on May 25. …

Commute Q & A to info@bikehouston.org
bikehouston.org
The following responses are to emails sent to info@bikehouston.org. Read on to learn more.
Q: I’ll be moving to Houston this fall to start a job at Memorial SW Hermann. I’m looking at renting an apartment at X location. I’ll typically need to get there by 630-645 so I can shower/change.
How feasible is it to bike commute? How safe is the area? I have Dinotte Helmet light and taillight. How feasible is it to cross the toll road and 69 on Fondren on a bike? Any other options/workarounds to avoid the highways and cars turning onto the highways? I don’t mind riding more miles if it’s a better route.
BTW I’ve commuted in Austin, but in Dallas at least when I lived there it just wasn’t feasible. Hoping Houston’s more bike friendly.
Thanks for your advice …
