One H.M. King High School alumnus and Kingsville native will spend his summer trekking from Austin to Alaska to raise money for cancer research, spread awareness and inspire hope to those still fighting. Genaro DeLeon, a 2013 graduate of H.M. King High School, was selected to participate in the Texas 4000 for Cancer and will spend 70 days this summer traveling by bike.

Details: This year’s ride will start at 6:30 p.m. Wheels will roll at 7:00 p.m. The parking lot just east of the Texas Tech Credit Union at 19th and Indiana will be the starting point. A police escort will be provided by the Lubbock Police Department as the cyclists travel south along Indiana to 98th Street and back. The route is about 11 miles. Riders should be able to ride 12 miles at 12 miles per hour. Cyclists must also wear helmets and lights are recommended. The Ride of Silence is a free ride where cyclists ride at a slow pace, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees. It’s been a busy week preparing for my tour to Texas. My trike. “Axel” got new shoes,chain,cassette and a good going over by the great guys at Two Wheel Drive and is patiently waiting for an early Monday morning start. The gear has been packed,unpacked and repacked many times with one more checkout before leaving. I feel confident that everything is in good order but there seems that something always gets overlooked. I guess that’s why we have convenience stores so we can get the things we inconveniently left at home or lost on our way.
