Day 45 – Van Horn to Acala, TX: Into the Rio Grande Valley
Wednesday April 13, 2016, 77 miles (124 km) – Total so far: 2,080 miles (3,347 km)
Van Horn has seen way better days than now. From reading the historic markers (thanks Bob D.) the town name is from days when the white travelers took over the only dependable water springs for dozens of miles within this desert basin to become a stop on the stage coach run to El Paso and California beyond. All the roadside auto travel vesitages are still here either as art galleries, antique shops or abandonment and ruin. Many in the 3rd category.
48 degrees when I rode out and onto the on ramp of interstate I-10. Yep, bicycle on the berm lane of the interstate. No other roads exist so you are routed there twice, for 9 miles then later 11 miles. Actually it’s pretty nice. The pavement is smooth, the gradients are gradual and I’m separated from the travel/truck lane by a rumble strip. I have a …
Day 46 – Acala to El Paso, TX: 98.6% through Texas
Thursday April 14, 2016, 47 miles (76 km) – Total so far: 2,127 miles (3,423 km)
Since we have been within sight of Mexico, Deb and I wanted to see the Rio Grande and see Mexico up close. We wished we’d brought our passports. The hotel clerk said you don’t need a passport to go there. (but how about the return?) So we drove down to where we thought we might see the Rio Grande where an El Paso street deadended at the river. We could see the concrete walls lining the river, the border fence, cars, buses and buildings across the the border less than 200′ away but the river was down inside the channel. It is amazing how many border crossings we saw in the past 2 days, more than …

Kerrville to Johnson City: Updated 4/14 – Then The Rains Came
Tuesday April 12, 2016, 71 miles (114 km) – Total so far: 1,703 miles (2,741 km)
Yesterday the weather was beautiful. A little hot from some, but being from KY and Rich being from GA we both appreciated the heat, more like we’re used to when riding. I’ve learned the weather changes quickly in TX. This morning we awoke with cloudy skies with the prediction for midday and afternoon rain/thunderstorms and heavy thunderstorms forecast for overnight.
Because of that we quickly packed up and headed out to put as many miles as possible behind us before the rains came. We had spent the evening in Kerrville-Schreiner City Park which is about 5 miles off course. I hadn’t used it yet on this trip, but for getting back on route I used Google Maps for bikes. Everyone else decided to follow me out. The ride out was …

Wednesday April 13, 2016, 51 miles (82 km) – Total so far: 1,754 miles (2,823 km)
I definitely am gaining weight, but unfortunately it’s not because of too much ice cream. In fact, my ice cream consumption for a ride is way behind quota. I have to start making fewer sandwiches in the morning, but with the wind and road surface I have no problem consuming them. Everytime I see a Dairy Queen the timing just isn’t right. This morning as I left the Best Western I rode less than a quarter mile before I passed a Dairy Queen. They need a bigger sign! A M&M Giant Blizzard is not quite considered the Breakfast of Champions.
Today I was smart enough to check my tire pressure so the pedaling was much easier. The Texas Hill country is properly named because all you seem to do is go up and down rolling hills. Sometimes you can get enough speed to crest the next hill and other times you have to gear down. Even though there were no “serious” hills today we did …

Day 5: That’s why they called it Socorro.
Monday April 11, 2016, 82 km (51 miles) – Total so far: 266 km (165 miles)
Spent the morning doing washing the bike, doing laundry, and eating of course.
I left Socorro at about noon. Again, I need to start focusing on leaving at a reasonable time.
The route for the day was rather simple, get out of Socorro on Route 1 and stay on it. …

Luba: Washington of Texas
Thursday April 14, 2016, 46 miles (75 km) – Total so far: 1,797 miles (2,892 km)
We left our charming B&B after a prolonged talk with our host and having him take our pictures. We planned to have lunch and spend some time in Navasota on the way to our destination. On the way, though, we decided to make a detour and visit Texas Washington State Park where Texas Declaration of Independence was signed and Texas constitution written. The visit was well worth the extra several miles. We learned how Texas settlers, led by Austin and Houston, rebelled against the Mexican government to achieve rights to be tried by the jury of their piers, to have schools for their children, and, alas, to keep their slaves. Slavery was illegal in Mexico. We spent more time there that expected, and Richard was already in Navasota and waiting for us. So we rushed through the nice looking town too fast, unfortunately. Richard did not want to …
