Garmin Edge Aggravation Bike Ride to Huffman
I did not ride on Monday for several reasons but I was out on the road today. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route because it is easy to exit Kingwood. The sky was overcast, 73 degrees with the wind out of the ENE at 7 mph. I dressed like it was a few degrees cooler with shorts, short and long sleeve jerseys and biking gloves. The humidity was 80%+ so the wind felt cooler than it would have with less humidity. I got an early start for a weekday ride leaving home at 10:55 so I could get back early for an afternoon chore and the a meeting on property taxes in the evening.
As I mentioned in Sunday’s ride post I got a replacement Edge 520 and Sunday’s test ride went perfect. I wish I could say the same for today’s ride. The new 520 started disconnecting from my phone around 8.4 miles into the ride and then settled back down. I thought maybe a passing car had a stray Bluetooth signal or something. Continuing the ride I got to 11.93 miles and the 520 froze. I noticed the distance was not increasing. I stopped to fix it. I saved the ride but it froze saying it was “uploading the ride” and I held two buttons to shut it off. I started it back up again and it seemed to be working. This morning the Garmin Connect app on my updated and I wondered if this might be a problem so I powered off my phone and powered back up. To be safe I started the Ride With GPS app to record the ride from that point. I resumed riding and did not have any more problems that I know of. The 520 recorded the rest of the ride. Later when I got back home at 1:45 I tried to sync the 520 with Garmin Connect online and got an error message on the first part of the ride. Having dealt with this before I uploaded both files to RideWithGPS.com and exported part 1 as a .gpx file. I then imported that into SportTracks and joined the two parts and then exported the data to upload to Garmin Connect, RideWithGPS and Strava. This is way too much work!! If the 520 repeats this I will use some other GPS recording method.
I took a short rest stop at the Huffman Chevron. The weather screens shots.
The weather forecast for Wednesday: early morning rain tapering off. I don’t know if I will bike but Thursday’s weather is much better.
